Youth Development Professional (Cultural Navigator)

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Provide support in bridging the gap between Boys & Girls Clubs/KIDSTOP programs and the Somali youth community. Plan and lead a variety of activities within a specific program area, such as Academic Success, Social Recreation, Arts & Crafts, Outdoor/Environment and Physical Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

  1. Build strong relationships within the Somali community through outreach, education, and networking to promote awareness of childcare services and resources.
  2. Assist with member recruitment initiatives to increase participation in the Club’s workforce readiness programs.
  3. Provide translation support during conversations with youth and parents.
  4. Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of positive youth development:
    1. Promotes and stimulate program participation;
    2. Provides guidance and role modeling to members.
    3. Focus on maintaining a safe, positive atmosphere for all youth.
    4. Exhibit a warm, concerned attitude toward youth that uses a positive approach in dealing with individuals as well as groups of children.
  5. Effectively plan and lead programs, services and a variety of activities for members.
  6. Effectively communicate with staff and with children of all ages being an active positive team member.
  7. Complete program planners in a timely manner including new, fun and inviting program ideas for the designated area(s).

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Ensure a productive work environment by participating in staff meetings.
  2. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  1. Bilingual in Somali and English with a strong understanding of Somali culture, and community dynamics.
  2. Ability to relate well with children in Boys & Girls Club/KIDSTOP group environment.
  3. Ability to be flexible, adaptable and mobile when supervising groups of children.
  4. Be aware of safety procedures for fire, tornado, lock down, etc.
  5. Be aware of and abide by Boys & Girls Club/KIDSTOP policies.
  6. Responsible for care and maintenance of program equipment, supplies and facility including daily clean up and proper use.

EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE

In order to meet Boys & Girls Clubs of America compliance, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota must adhere to the following requirements:

  • School-Year term (September-June): Must be 18 years of age, and no longer in high school.
  • Experience: one to three months of relevant experience.

FUNDAMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS

Maintains close, daily contact with members and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues and explain guidelines/ instructions. Maintains positive relations with school personnel the general public and member families at all times.
