Director of Finance/CFO

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: The Director of Finance/CFO is responsible for managing, planning, and reporting the business and financial activities of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota, including supervision of accounting and information technology staff. This position serves as a member of the senior administration team.


1. Establish and implement policies and procedures for all financial/accounting functions, ensuring appropriate controls and compliance with generally accepted accounting practices, regulations, and contractual requirements.

2. Lead organizational planning and development of operating, capital and fund account budgets to be presented to the Board of Directors.

3. Work closely with Club leadership and managers to:
Manage the preparation and analysis of financial reports on a monthly and as-needed basis.
Provide timely and complete reporting of financial results and offer recommendations to maintain the fiscal health of the Club.

4. Oversee the process for identifying and evaluating opportunities for improved financial operations, record keeping and reporting. Work with external auditors to prepare and review audit schedules and annual report of audit findings.

5. Seek and secure financial support and resources by managing:
the preparation of the annual request for United Way funds.
all assets and investments of the Boys & Girls Club, including real property, equities, bonds and other assets.

6. Control expenditures against budget.

7. Identify, analyze, and communicate potential risks and recommendations to the President/CEO and Administration team.

8. Ensure a productive work environment within the finance/accounting, clerical, and information technology function.

9. Responsible for overseeing the processing of payroll and serve as a backup, when needed to complete the payroll process.

10. Administrator of 401k, providing annual reports and collaborating with HR on employee trainings.

11. Select, manage, and develop clerical, accounting, and technology staff.

12. Ensure the maintenance of existing Club technology and information management systems. Plan and implement updates to technology and information management systems.

13. Work closely with Director of Development on grant applications and grant reporting.

14. Work closely with Human Resources Coordinator on payroll, insurance, and benefits to ensure proper accounting procedures and compliance.

15. Oversee outside relationships with lending institutions, leasing organizations, insurance agent, and accounting firm.

16. Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee and act as a resource to the Board of Directors.

17. In the absence of the President/CEO, approve expenditures and make financial decisions for the Club.


1. Train staff in proper procedures regarding cash receipts, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and budgeting as needed or requested.

2. Guide Site Managers in budget management.

3. Develop and maintain good public relations.


1. Thorough knowledge of budgeting and accounting practices, processes, and procedures of non-profit organizations.

2. Strong understanding of the importance of internal controls and the ability to maintain an adequate control environment.

3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

4. Strong computer and information system knowledge.

5. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

6. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.


Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with an emphasis in accounting or finance.

Experience: Minimum of five years of experience managing accounting functions. Non-profit agency experience is preferred. Supervisory experience is required.
